Introducing the Elodie Wrap Dress pattern!

Elodie Wrap Dress Pattern // Versatile wrap dress sewing pattern with multiple bodices and skirts // by Closet Core Patterns

I know we’re not supposed to pick favourites, but our newest design, the Elodie Wrap Dress pattern in sizes 0-30, is definitely taking up a lot of space in our hearts right now. Flowy and romantic with lovely details, it’s one of those patterns that makes you want to drop everything you’re doing so you can hole up in your sewing room, shut out the outside world and simply focus on making something beautiful.

Once again, we’ve tried to bring you a pattern with a ton of versatility. You can choose between a short or long dolman sleeve, and our swishy skirt comes in three lengths (above the knee, midi or maxi) with optional patch pockets. As usual, our 0-20 size range is drafted for a B cup, while our 14-30 range is drafted for a D cup.

We had a few goals with Elodie. One: create a design that could easily go from chill picnic to black-tie wedding. For a chic day to day dress, choose the above-knee or midi-length skirt. In a more casual, structured fabric like linen or cotton with the patch pocket, it’s a wrap dress workhorse you’ll want to wear daily. For our samples, we’ve used a crisp cotton chenille from Stylemaker Fabrics, and an earthy linen print from Blackbird Fabrics (both are out of stock, sorry!)

We’ve never done any eveningwear before, and I LOVE that you could use the maxi version of this dress for a formal event with the right fabric; we think it reads a bit more “fancy” with our longer sleeve. To prove it, we sewed up a sample in gorgeous 4 ply silk crepe and styled our model Vanessa as a bride; the result is super effortless and elegant, and even though big events are off the table for most of us right now, we hope to see many of you swanning about in this dress at weddings and celebrations in the near future, whether you’re a guest or star of the show.

My other big goal was a gape-free wrap dress pattern. I have never sewn a wrap dress that didn’t need major adjustment surgery to avoid flashing the girls, and I’m super happy with how close-fitting our bodice is for most figures (although if you need a small or full bust adjustment, you may still need to make some tweaks – more on that in our upcoming fitting post!)

Speaking of busts… this bodice features one of my favourite Closet Core details in recent memory – three release pleats under the bust, in addition to pleats in the back for lovely, soft shaping. With the dolman sleeve, I think this is one of the prettiest dresses we’ve ever designed! Since the neckline is assembled with a facing, you get a clean finish without any visible stitching, but you might also choose to finish it with bias tape. I’d like to try that myself this fall for the cozy cool weather version I’m planning in my head.

Here’s the maxi skirt with our shorter sleeve; it still feels elegant but in a fun print like this ice-dyed rayon challis made by yours truly (tutorial coming your way soon!) you could pull off wearing it around town with a flat sandal or block heel boot. I love how swishy it is when you walk!

Maybe my favourite combo is the long sleeve with midi skirt. I finally got to use this splatter print silk I’ve been hoarding for two years (it was purchased randomly in New York so I don’t have a source) and I think this is basically my platonic ideal of a dress. I love the volume and drapiness – wearing this makes me feel sooo sophisticated, and the subtle high/low hem gives the skirt a certain something. The silhouette is a bit 40s isn’t it? I can’t wait to wear this in the fall with knee high boots.

Elodie is available as a PDF in sizes 0-20 and 14-30, with the print pattern in sizes 0-20. Since this is a relatively straight forward sew we don’t have a sewalong planned, but you can look forward to posts about styling, fitting and fabric, in addition to our tester round up. In the meantime, do you have any questions or comments? Let me know in the comments, and we hope you are excited about this beauty as we are!
