Frequently Asked Questions

Digital Downloads

I lost my download link. Help! Expand

No problem! You can get new links for every pattern you've ordered from us by entering your email address here. If that doesn't work, double-check any alternative email addresses you may have used when checking out.

Alternatively, if you have an account in our pattern shop, login to access your past orders, which will include a download link for all patterns ordered after July 24, 2018.

If you still can't find your download link, please email us with your order number or other proof of purchase and we will try and re-send your download link. Please note we cannot resend patterns that were purchased more than two years ago, or that exceed our limit of 10 download attempts per file.

How do I download my digital PDF pattern? Expand

First, we suggest creating an account in our shop so you can access all your files in one place at any time!

After you place an order, you will land on a page with a custom download link. You can download your pattern then, or use the link included in the order confirmation sent via email. If you don’t receive a download link via email, please check your junk mail as it may have been rerouted (and add us to your safe senders list so it doesn't happen again!)

Download your pattern files!

Our digital patterns always come with the following files:

  • A digital instruction booklet in Letter/A4 format. Depending on the pattern, it may include hyperlinks to supplementary online content. You can print this, but we prefer to follow along on a phone or tablet to save paper.
  • Print at home pattern: letter/A4 paper. This format can be used on any home printer, whether you're using imperial or metric paper.
  • Copyshop pattern: 46"x48"/A0 paper. This is the file you'll send to your copyshop to print on a large scale plotter printer. It will work on imperial or metric paper.
  • Copy Shop File Directions:  This will explain how to print our files at a copyshop, and give you permission to print it.

You will be allowed 10 attempts to download your file. Please save your file in a safe place. We suggest Dropbox, a free online cloud service.

How do I print my PDF pattern at home? Expand

All of our patterns are formatted to be printed at home or at a copy shop. Our print-at-home files will print on both Letter and A4 paper.

If you are printing at home, please make sure to use the Letter/A4 paper files. This format can be used on any home printer, whether you're using imperial or metric paper.

We suggest you use Adobe Reader (its free!) or Apple Preview to print your files. It is very important to select “No scaling or “Print at 100%” when you are printing. Make sure you print and measure the test square on the first page to make sure you are printing at the correct scale. Directions for printing digital files are included in all of our PDF instructions.

It is very important that you print your pattern to the proper scale. Always print the first sheet with the scaling box first to ensure your printer settings are correct.

For more help on printing our PDF patterns, please visit our PDF Printing Guide

How do I assemble my PDF file? Expand

Once you have ensured the scale of your print at home pattern is correct, print off the remainder of your pages. If you are printing specific pieces, use the pattern printing diagrams to determine exactly what pages you need to print.

To assemble your pattern, we recommend using scissors or an Exacto knife and a glue stick or tape. You can either cut off the right and bottom edges of each sheet or trim the corners of the lines, or cut diagonally at the edge of the lines, depending on where the page is placed in the row, you’ll need to trim two to three corners; both methods ensure you have a bit of paper to glue the next sheet to.

Once each sheet is trimmed, start assembling the pattern in rows. I prefer to do one row at a time, and then glue them all together at the end.

Follow the numbered guides to assemble your pattern in the correct order. Overlap your sheets and then glue or tape them together. If things don't line up *exactly*, you might find it easier if you separate the pieces in a row.

Where can I get my copyshop file printed? Expand

Call around the print shops in your community to find out who does blueprint printing for architects; they have large scale printers capable of printing our files and should be quite affordable. Fedex and Staples will also do large format printing. There are also a growing number of printers who will ship printed patterns to you. Try: PDFPlotting or Blueprintsprinting (US), Netprinter, Printingandplotting or Print Your Patterns(UK), OfficeWorks or Warehouse Stationery (Australia), Sew YYC or Nap and Notch  (Canada), Sysiden - (Denmark), Schnittherzchen or Preiswertplotten (Germany), Repro-plotservice (Netherlands), Allkopi (Norway)

My copyshop says they can't print the files! Expand

All of our patterns are password protected for security reasons and as such, cannot be opened in programs like Photoshop or Illustrator. All copyshop files must be printed from a PDF program like Adobe reader, Acrobat or Mac Preview. If your copyshop claims they can't print the file, please let them know they need to use PDF viewing software.

If they say the pattern is copyrighted and can't be printed, please ask them to read the written disclaimer on the file next to the logo; we permit use for single-copy printing. We also include a "Copy Shop File Directions" PDF with our digital downloads that you can share with your local copy shop with further direction.

What size paper should I use to print my file? Expand

Our large format "Copyshop/A0" files can be printed on either European A0 sized paper (33.1" x 46.8" / 841mm x 1189mm) or on North American 36" wide roll feed paper (36" x 48" / 9144mm x 1219.2mm).

Our "Letter/A4" print-at-home files can be printed on either standard North American letter sized paper (8.5" x 11" / 215.9mm x 279.4mm) or European A4 sized paper (8.27" × 11.7 " / 210mm x 297mm).

Am I able to turn off and print only the size I need using the layers feature? Expand

All PDF patterns released after February 2019 include layers, which means each size can be turned on or off (the "Text" layer must be turned on for all sizes). Please note layers are currently only supported by Adobe Acrobat & Reader, not Apple Preview. You will need to open your pattern file using Adobe if you would like to use this feature.

If you are using a pattern released prior to February 2019, layers are not an included feature, so all sizes will print. We are working on updating older patterns to include layers. Currently, the following patterns include this feature: Kalle Shirtdress, Charlie Caftan, Jasika Blazer, Fiore Skirt, Pietra Pants, Cielo Top,  Sienna Maker Jacket, Blanca Flight Suit and Elodie Wrap Dress.

I bought a print pattern but heard you updated the PDF version. Can I get access to the update? Expand

The beauty of a PDF pattern is the ability to access any update we make to the pattern (in addition to the instant gratification and lower carbon footprint!) Updates may include the addition of our 14-30 size range, or tweaks and improvements to the pattern following customer feedback. Due to the nature of digital products and the logistical challenges involved, we are only able to offer pattern updates to customers who have purchased a PDF pattern. Just like book publishers cannot send updated editions to people who have purchased hard copy books, it is not possible for us to update a physical, printed product.

If you would like access to future pattern updates, please select PDF when choosing your pattern format; if we ever update a pattern, you will be sent an email notification with a download link to access the new version.

Pricing & Taxes

What currency will I be charged in? Expand

Although we are based in Canada, our online pattern shop charges in USD currency only. This is because the majority of our customers are in the US, and we ship and print our patterns from the US. If you are Canadian, please get in touch to get our Canadian only discount.

Am I charged for taxes? Expand

All Canadians are charged GST and possibly PST depending on where they live in Canada. Customers based in the EU will be charged VAT on digital goods only. If you have a discount code, it will be applied to the total price before taxes.

As of 2015, the EU is enforcing a law that requires all businesses to collect VAT on digital products purchased by any customer based in the European Union. As a result, we are legally required to charge you VAT based on your home country. You can read more about the VAT regulations here. At the moment, these regulations do not apply to physical products.

Shipping

How is my order shipped and when can I expect it? Expand

Please note that delivery delays are longer than usual due to the current parcel volumes and social distancing measures in effect due to the COVID-19 pandemic. There is no way for us to guarantee that your parcel will arrive at its destination if you choose to not have it tracked. For more information, read Canada Post press release posted on May 26, 2020 or the USPS service alerts.

American customers: We use a courier to bring our packages into the United States once or twice a week based on order volume. Packages in the US are shipped via USPS First Class and Priority Mail. Please allow 6 to 10 days for your parcel to arrive, and we ask you to please wait up to 3 weeks before contacting us.

If you have submitted your order a few days ago, it is likely that your package has been shipped and modifications to your order are no longer possible even if you have not yet received a shipping confirmation and a tracking number. You will receive this information once your package is scanned at the US post office.

Canadian customers: Your orders are sent via Canada Post letter or parcel post. Please allow 5 to 10 days for your parcel to arrive, and wait up to 3 weeks before contacting us.

International customers: Estimated delivery dates are listed in brackets next to the shipping price when you checkout. International Packet is the most affordable but can take 28-84 days to arrive. Airmail is the best option if you would like your pattern quickly, and we suggest choosing "Tracked Packet International" or "Xpresspost International" if you require tracking. We are not responsible for customs fees.

If you have been waiting for your package and the above mentioned waiting times have elapsed, please message us about your delay. We’ll be happy to work with you to figure out a solution.

I haven’t received my package yet. Expand

Given the huge volume of mail and the challenges that the pandemic, holiday season, and environmental conditions impose on the performance of the mail service during these times, we ask you to please be patient with the delivery of your packages.

Once you receive confirmation that your package has been shipped, please wait 3 weeks if you live in the US or Canada, or 6 weeks if you live elsewhere. Once these waiting times have elapsed, please feel free to message us about your delay. We’ll be happy to work with you to figure out a solution.

Here are a few things that could have happened:

  • If your address is Incorrect:

If your package has been returned due to an incorrect address, we are happy to repost your order. Please note that the customer will be responsible for any new shipping fees.

  • If your package is lost or stolen in transit:

We are not responsible for lost or stolen packages that are not tracked. Remember that tracking is always an option, and we recommend it especially during this time. For our international customers outside of the US and Canada, we suggest choosing airmail and "Tracked Packet International" or "Xpresspost International".

  • If your package arrives damaged:

Once you receive your package, and the items are damaged, please contact us about it and send us a photo so we can follow up with your request.

  • If your package arrives damaged:

Once you receive your package, and the items are damaged, please contact us about it and send us a photo so we can follow up with your request.

What about customs on international orders? Expand

Orders shipped outside Canada and the United States may be subject to taxes and customs at the border. These charges are the responsibility of the customer. Please contact your local customs agency if you have additional questions.

SIZING & SIZE RANGES

What size should I make? Expand

Please visit our Size Charts page for instructions on finding your size. If you are making the Sophie Swimsuit and need help choosing your cup size, please check out this blog post.

When will more patterns be available in extended sizing? Expand

We are currently working on re-releasing our best-selling patterns in sizes 14-30; you can see what patterns are currently available here. In the coming year, we hope to release the Kelly Anorak, Carolyn Pajamas, and a jeans pattern. We are also releasing 4-6 new patterns in both size ranges each year, so we appreciate your patience as we ensure that each pattern we offer meets our high standards of quality.

Are patterns in your extended size range available as print patterns? Expand

Our 14-30 size range is available exclusively in PDF format only. We made this decision because the vast majority of our sales are in PDF (at a rate that keeps growing year after year), and by going in this direction we are able to get patterns to you much faster than if we printed them. We’ll keep evaluating the possibility of print in the future as Closet Core Patterns grows! In the meantime, if you can’t or don’t want to print at home, we highly recommend services like PDFPlotting.com who can print and send PDF files to you at a low cost (we have a full list of PDF printers in our guide to assembling PDF patterns here).

I bought a print version of a pattern that is now available in extended sizing. Can I get access to the additional size range?

If you would like access to future pattern updates, please select PDF when choosing your pattern format; if we ever update a pattern, you will be sent an email notification with a download link to access the updated version.
