Easy Pattern Hacking: My Tapered Leg Jenny Overalls

Sometimes it’s the simple things. I made these full-length overalls last spring (using our Jenny Overalls pattern and hip button tutorial), and while I loved them, I found they didn’t get pulled out of my closet very often. I made them long enough to wear with heels (for that legs for miles look) but in such thick n’ beefy olive twill it felt a little forced. What they wanted to be was more practical, down and dirty overalls, and after seeing these perfectly tapered Jennys on instagram, I decided to grab a pair of scissors and go to town.

The revised leg shape is now giving me a Carhartts vibe, more workwear and less glam. I still love that wide legged look, but this fabric was calling out for a different treatment.

Not that I’ll be changing motor oil in red suede clogs and a vintage faux fur leopard coat anytime soon, but that’s an irrelevant detail.

If you’re feeling this slimmer, more tapered leg, all you need to do is take equal width from the side seam and inseam on the front and back leg. I basted and experimented until I got the shape I wanted, taking about 2.5″ off each seam. This is what my pattern looked like after modifications:

A pretty easy change with pretty dramatic results. My favourite kind. So… do you prefer the tapered leg or do you think I made a terrible mistake?
